The Canadian Automobile Association will periodically survey members on behalf of provincial clubs. It allows us to gauge where members place their priorities,
and helps us shape the direction we take as an organization.
Our CAA National Study
shows that a majority of Canadians rank roadway funding
as a top federal priority.
- 64% of Canadians think that establishing a federal
highways & border infrastructure fund of $2
billion over the next 5 years is a good idea.
- 60% of Canadians said the condition of their roads and highways had worsened in 2006, up from 46% in 2005.
- When asked to rate the local condition of various types of infrastructure, 42% of Canadian gave their roads the lowest rating. That’s up from 35% in 2005.

- 72% of Canadians rated “improving roads and highways” as a high federal priority. “Developing a long-term infrastructure vision for Canada” was ranked even higher: 74% declared it a high federal priority.
- When asked why Canadians thought the roads and highways
might be worsening in Canada, 52% said the government
is not making investments in new roads and highways
to deal with increasing demands. 49% said that government
cuts to spending on roads and highways maintenance
is making problems more severe.
- 79% of respondents believe that the amount of excise
gasoline taxes (8%) dedicated to building and maintaining
roads and highways in Canada in 2004-2005 was too
little.
