Voltage Adapters

Why Do I Need One?

Why can’t the world live in peace…AND use the same electrical standards?

Hmmm. Good question. We can’t answer the first part, but we can certainly help you with the second!

If you plan to bring a hair dryer, electric shaver, hot plate, etc., to a foreign country, you will probably need an adapter, converter or transformer. That’s because the plugs either won’t fit into the foreign electrical socket, or the foreign voltage in use is different.

Adapters: are used simply to allow the plug of a product to fit into a foreign electrical socket.

Converters: allow products designed for use in North America (110 volt system) to be used in a specific foreign destination that operates on a different electrical current (most foreign countries use a 220 – 240 volt system).

Transformers: also convert the voltage of a product, but are generally required for items that need to be plugged in for longer periods of time.

Important Note: Converters and transformers are to be used with electric products only. Electronic products that have circuit boards, such as cell phones, computers, some battery chargers, etc., should NOT be used with converters or transformers.

How Can We Help?

CAA Manitoba can tell you about the power requirements for the country you’re visiting. We’ll ask you:

  • your destination

  • the electrical voltage (listed on the product) of the appliance you wish to bring

  • how long you will use it

  • the wattage (listed on the product) of your appliance

  • the configuration (2 prong or 3 prong) of the plug

We have the adapters, converters or transformers you’ll need to operate your electrical appliances overseas. For more information contact a Member Services Counsellor at your local CAA Service Centre.
