Safety First!
Think safety when working with batteries...,
just remember you are working with corrosive acid, explosive gases and 100's amps of electrical current.
Batteries contain a sulphuric acid electrolyte. This is a highly corrosive poison that will produce hydrogen gas when recharged and will explode if ignited. When a battery blows up, it will drench you in sulphuric acid. Sulphuric acid eats up clothing and burns skin, so be careful.
Safety Tips:
DO:
- Remember to always disconnect the ground lead when:
- working on or near the battery
- re-connecting the battery (A bad ground can keep your battery from charging)
- Wear safety goggles
- Remove all jewellery
- Wear acid-resistant clothing (i.e. polyester)
- Ensure there is plenty of ventilation
- Wash your hands with soap and water after handling a battery to help neutralize any acid
NEVER:
- Charge or jump-start a frozen battery or one that is low on electrolyte (it may rupture or explode)
- Tip the battery (because sulphuric acid may spill out and cause burns)
- Smoke when servicing your battery. (Explosive hydrogen gas is present and may ignite)
