Glare
The sun rises later and sets earlier as fall marches on and this time of year lends itself to driving with glare - whether driving toward or away from the sun. Here are some helpful tips to make driving with glare a bit easier:
- Drive slower - it's against the law to drive at speeds in excess of road conditions so use the same precautions and care as driving in other hazardous conditions, like fog or rain.
- Consider a different route - use north/south streets until you find an east/west road with lots of trees or taller buildings.
- Lower that visor - when you lower your visor, push it all the way forward, then pull it back to the proper position. Don't leave the edge of the visor inches from the bridge of your nose, as it could cause injury in a crash.
- Keep your glass clean - streaks, smudges and road grime on your windows catch and refract light. This includes the inside of your windows. Scratched eyeglasses or contact lenses also make glare worse.
- Keep your headlights clean - even a thin layer of road grime on the lenses can block up to 90% of the light and severely restrict your ability to see at night.
- Turn on your headlights - use your low-beam headlights when driving away from the sun, allowing you to be seen more readily by those driving into the sun.
- Wear your sunglasses - wearing quality sunglasses with polarized lenses and UV protection can help cut down on some of the glare.
