Vehicle Maintenance Tips Spring & Summer

Are your wipers wiped
It might be time for a new set. Windshield wipers seldom last more than six months under severe driving conditions and a year is about tops. Wipers are vital for safety during wet, sloppy spring weather - check yours today.

Time for a change
One of the most important things you can do for your car is to change the oil -- regularly. Under normal operating conditions, you should change the oil about every six months (or 5,000 km). For "severe conditions", change your oil more frequently -- about every three months (or 3,000 km). When in doubt, check your owner's manual.

Stay in the pink
Your engine's automatic transmission fluid should be a healthy pink colour. If it's brown or smells burnt, it's time to change the fluid and the filter. Don't forget to check its automatic transmission fluid as well as the oil.

Under pressure
When the seasons change, so does tire pressure. Make sure your tires are at the manufacturer's recommended level. They'll last longer, you'll save on gas, and your car will be safer to drive.

Spring cleaning
This includes your car, too! Give it a real good wash, especially the underside and wheel wells, to get rid of winter salt and grime. Touch up chipped paint to prevent rust. Replace any burnt-out lights. And finally, make sure all your engine's fluids are topped up.

The car wash

  • Never use dishwashing detergent or laundry soap. Use a special car wash solution that won't damage the car's finish - and be gentle! Use a heavy mist spray for rinsing.
  • Household glass cleaners are fine for most car windows, but if yours are tinted use a mixture of vinegar and water.
  • Wash your car in a shaded area to avoid spotting.
  • To dry it, use a leather polishing cloth, or a cotton terry-cloth towel; avoid nylon or synthetic towels and towels that have been washed with fabric softener they'll damage your car's finish.
  • Treat your tires with a rubber-protection product.

Look between the covers
The most important information you need to know about your car is probably sitting in your glove box -- The Owner's Manual. There, you'll discover your vehicle's personal maintenance and operating needs. A little reading could save a lot on repairs.

Have you been seeing spots
Pay attention to any unusual drips or puddles where you park your car. It's a sign that your car could be losing vital fluids that might result in serious problems. The only puddle you don't have to worry about is condensation from your air conditioner. Maintenance today could save you from an expensive bill tomorrow.

Are your tires tired
There're five basic things to check: air pressure, tread depth, proper tire rotation, balancing and alignment. Correct air pressure makes tires last longer - and will give you better mileage. Good tires mean safe driving, and better vehicle performance. So keep rolling this summer - check your tires today.
