Basic auto insurance is compulsory in Manitoba, but there’s never been a better time to consider extension coverage

Every driver in Manitoba knows basic auto insurance is mandatory and must be purchased through Manitoba Public Insurance.

MPI’s basic personal policy includes: protection in the event of loss or damage of your vehicle, such as collision, vandalism, theft, hail and fire; $500,000 third-party liability coverage (often not enough); and a Personal Injury Protection Plan, which provides all Manitobans with benefits in the event of injury or death, regardless of who was at fault in an accident.

In addition to this basic mandatory coverage, there are many optional, extended coverages you can add on—depending on your needs. From lowering your deductible to increasing liability, you can build an insurance policy that reflects how you use your vehicle.

“Our mission has always been to keep Members and Manitoba drivers safe,” says Matthew Turack, Group President at CAA Insurance. With that principle in mind, CAA Insurance set out to develop a product that meets individual needs and the changing lifestyles of Manitoba drivers.

“Launching this fall, CAA Automobile Extension Insurance is a perfect option for people looking for choice with their extended auto insurance,” Turack says.

First, you need to register and get a basic policy for your vehicle with MPI. Then you can enhance your policy with additional coverage through CAA Insurance or other private insurance companies. You may even find extension coverage not available to you through MPI products.

CAA Auto Extension enables you to lower your deductible and increase your third-party liability. Other coverage options are tire pothole and puncture protection, family pet protection, emergency expenses, lock re-keying and loss of use coverage. While you don’t have to be a Member to purchase CAA Insurance, CAA Members receive exclusive savings.

“It’s not going to change how you purchase basic auto insurance,” Turack says. But the conversation should start with an authorized CAA Insurance Broker who provides both Autopac and CAA Auto Extension coverage.

“Insurance isn’t supposed to be complicated,” he says. “And now Autopac and CAA Auto Extension Insurance can be purchased together, to give Manitoba drivers peace of mind knowing they have great coverage at the best possible price.”
