Easy ways to save money while travelling.

There's no question: Travelling can be expensive. When you plan a vacation, obvious expenses—transportation, accommodations, food and attractions—are always top of mind. But if you use a few simple tricks, you can also avoid pricey pitfalls that may pop up along the way.

Don't check your bag.

If you're flying overseas, you'll likely get one free checked bag. But if you're travelling within North America, you should plan to pay at least $30 for each checked bag. If you can, fly only with carry-on luggage to save some cash.

Take a bus, bike or subway.

You've paid for your flights, but how are you going to get around when you land? If you don't want to rent a car or rely on taxis or services like Uber (fees can really add up fast), get familiar with the public transit system in the city you're visiting. Download apps like Citymapper or Transit, which provide route info and directions in several international cities.

Get the right coverage.

Depending on where you're going, you may need to get vaccinated. While Manitoba Health does not cover these costs, a little money out of pocket is well worth the peace of mind of staying healthy while you're away.

Spend more, earn more.

Did you know that most credit cards charge a 2.5 percent (or greater) fee whenever you make a purchase in a foreign currency? You likely didn't notice, because the fee gets built into the conversion that ends up on your statement.

If you put the majority of your out-of-country purchases—from meals to attraction tickets to souvenirs—on your credit card, those extra few dollars will add up. To help offset the fees, look for credit cards that offer cash-back options or other rewards when you charge purchases.

Stay connected.

Wi-Fi is now free at many hotels and airports across the globe. But to post pics and check emails anywhere, call your cellular service provider to find out about travel data plans before your departure. Or, if your phone is unlocked, buy a less-expensive data plan from a local carrier when you arrive at your destination.

Another option that's gaining traction: a portable Wi-Fi device for seamless internet access. Look online before your trip; many companies will send a pocket-size gadget to your destination. You simply use it—typically for a daily flat rate—and mail it back before you leave.

With a little advance planning and a few simple strategies, you can enjoy a safe, affordable and adventure-filled getaway!
