It's the little things that Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Support Group (CCCSG) does for families that makes this 100% volunteer-led organization so special. Every board member has been directly impacted by childhood cancer, and it’s through that lens that CCCSG is run. “It gives us a different perspective,” says chair Naomi Fehr.

According to CCCSG, more than 50 families in Manitoba hear the devastating words “your child has cancer” every year. Established in the mid-1980s, CCCSG works closely with CancerCare MB and The Children’s Hospital of Winnipeg to provide emotional support and resources for families. From giving care packages to newly diagnosed families to providing hospital parking passes and hot meals for those with extended hospital stays, CCCSG tries to make a difference during a difficult time.

There’s a pay-it-forward philosophy that extends to those who have received help from CCCSG. A contact list is available for families who are looking to talk to someone who has gone down a similar path. Fundraising events are held regularly, including a recent draw for a showroom condition 1967 Ford 100 pickup truck that raised $105,800.

CCCSG also takes part in the happy moments. The organization arranges events throughout the year, like its annual family camp weekend and upcoming Christmas event for cancer patients and their siblings. Childhood cancer survivor high school graduates are celebrated with scholarships and prizes, including a $500 Best Buy gift certificate, and their photographs are featured in CCCSG’s quarterly newsletters.
