What is an International Driving Permit?

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a document which, when accompanied by a valid driver's licence, enables a person to drive vehicles for tourism purposes in many foreign countries. Most international car rental agencies will request an IDP, even though one may not be required to drive in their country. An IDP is valid for one year from the date of issue, providing your Canadian licence is valid for the duration of your trip.

IDP's are available in Canada exclusively at CAA Stores and are available to both Members and non-members.

IDP Eligibility

  • You are 18 years of age or older
  • You hold a Canadian provincial driver's licence. An IDP cannot be issued for a provisional, graduated or suspended licence, nor for any vehicle class not presently covered by the bearer's provincial driver's licence.
  • You have a Canadian home address

Only CAA is authorized to issue IDPs in Canada, under a UN-approved mandate. Any non-CAA issued IDP is fake and may not protect you in a foreign country.

For more information, visit the Government of Canada website, click here.

Foreign visitors to Canada must obtain an IDP in their home country.

IDP processing time varies depending on the application method selected. CAA Stores can often process an IDP application during the same day. Please note that online and mail in applications require time for processing and shipping.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ).

An International Driving Permit, or IDP, is proof that you possess a valid driver's licence issued by a competent authority in Canada. It translates your driving qualifications into ten of the world's most commonly used languages, and it allows travellers to drive in over 150 different countries without further tests or applications. Visit the Government of Canada IDP webpage for more information on countries requiring an IDP.

NOTE: The IDP is only valid when accompanied by a valid Canadian provincial driver's licence.

An IDP provides you with an extra piece of photo identification for international travel. Plus, most international car rental agencies will request an IDP, even though one may not be required to drive in that country.
